Description
This is a good site for collecting crab (both Dungeness and Red Rock), and for “treasure hunting” lost fishing lures and all the junk that falls off the pier 300 ft pier. You might even be able to spear some flounder if you are quick enough. The end of the pier is about 45ft deep and dog-legs parallel to shore another 100ft. It is mostly sand and some eel grass to the sides of the pier. Under the pier is predominately sand too but you’ll see many abandoned crab pots and loads of fishing lures on the pilings. The pilings often have some interesting life on them and dogfish can often be seen cruising along the bottom. It is recommended as a night dive because the pier closes down to fishermen at 10:00, making it safe to dive under the pier.
Special Restrictions:
There are portable toilets from June – September at the Pier and a lighted covered picnic area to change under. Beware of fishermen if you are not diving after hours. Don’t get locked in! They close the gate promptly at 10:00 so park on the street outside the parking lot. Keep an eye out for seals and sea lions who come and steal fish off the fishermen’s lines!
How to get there:
From I-5 Take 320th St West through Federal Way to the very end and take a right on 47th. Go until it dead-ends into Dash point road and take a left. Take a right on Markham Ave (at the big sign to the Lobster Shop). Follow it to the end and the pier will be right in front of you. Park in the parking lot if you are going to leave before it closes or on the street if doing a night dive.
